5/26/06-A bill that would have prohibited active members of the Tennessee Highway Patrol from engaging in certain political activities has died.
Sponsored by Sen. Mark Norris, R-Collierville, SB3761 also specified certain political activities that active patrol members are authorized to participate in.
The bill prohibited active members of the patrol from running for, or holding, elective office and participating in partisan political activities. It didn’t prohibit a highway patrol member from making contributions, attending political meetings, rallies or conventions when not in uniform, signing petitions for specific legislative action, or placing a bumper sticker on the member's personal motor vehicle.
A companion bill – HB3854 – also died.
