5/10/06-A bill that would have prohibited drivers from using hand-held or “hands-free” devices while driving has died.
Sponsored by Rep. Betty Nuovo, D-Middlebury, H563 remained in the House Transportation Committee when the session ended, effectively killing it for the year.
The bill would have made it a secondary offense to drive while chatting – meaning a person would have to be pulled over for another violation, such as speeding, before they could be ticketed for talking on the phone.
Violators would have faced a $25 fine for a first offense. A second offense would have resulted in a $50 fine while subsequent offenses would have netted a $100 fine.
