6/5/06-Delegate Ron Walters, R-Cross Lanes, said he wants state lawmakers to either authorize capping West Virginia’s 27-cent-per-gallon excise tax or roll it back, the Charleston Daily Mail reported.
Walters said he might propose legislation to address high pump prices during an expected special session this summer.
The state’s fuel tax can change at the first of each year because it is based on the average wholesale price of fuel between July 1 and Oct. 31. It was expected to increase 3.5 cents per gallon this past Jan. 1, but Gov. Joe Manchin III signed an executive order to temporarily freeze the tax.
The automatic tax is expected to change again Jan. 1, 2007, after a year of near-record pump prices.
