6/14/07-The Senate voted 21-18 to approve a bill that would require state health officials to establish safe growing and handling standards for leafy greens. It’s been forwarded to the Assembly for further consideration.
Sponsored by Sen. Dean Florez, D-Shafter, SB201 would allow growers and handlers to seek a variance allowing them to use alternative safe procedures that provide equivalent protection.
Violators would face as much as $10,000 fines.

4/20/07-The Senate Agriculture and Health committees have approved a bill that is part of a legislative package that would impose mandatory food-safety regulations on the state’s lettuce and spinach growers.
Sponsored by Sen. Dean Florez, D-Shafter, SB201 would prohibit the use of raw manure for fertilizer. It also would require that water used for growing leafy greens be tested every two weeks during the growing season and immediately prior to harvest.
Removed from the bill was a provision that would prohibit the use of creek, tributary or stream water for irrigation.
Growers would be required to maintain records of these practices, which must be reviewed prior to transporting the leafy greens.
Violators would face as much as $30,000 in fines.
The bill now heads to the Senate Appropriations Committee.
