3/22/07-A bill has died that sought to charge individuals with "driving while distracted" if they are talking on a phone and get in a wreck.
Sponsored by Rep. Mary Margaret Oliver, D-Decatur, HB5 remained in the House Motor Vehicles Committee at the deadline to advance, effectively killing it for the year.
The bill would have fined offenders up to $500 if they cause a wreck while talking on mobile phones. They also would have faced a loss of one point on their driver's licenses.
Motorists could challenge the charge if they could prove the call didn't contribute to the accident.
