3/29/07-Gov. Ernie Fletcher signed a bill into law that allows for higher speed limits on rural interstates and parkways in the state.
The new law, previously SB83, calls for the speed limit for all vehicles to be increased to 70 mph - up from the current 65 mph. Speed limits on the state's urban interstates will be unchanged.
Sponsored by Sen. Brett Guthrie, R-Bowling Green, the bill requires an engineering safety study be performed before any speed limit increase. After that, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet would review the parts of roadways where the maximum speed limit could be increased.

3/13/07-The Senate voted 35-2 to sign off on the House-approved version of a bill that would allow the state to raise the speed limit on rural interstates and parkways. It now heads to Gov. Ernie Fletcher's desk.
Sponsored by Sen. Brett Guthrie, R-Bowling Green, SB83 could increase the speed limit for all vehicles to 70 mph - up from the current 65 mph. Speed limits on the state's urban interstates would be unchanged.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet would be required to review the parts of roadways where the maximum speed limit could be increased. The House added a provision that would prohibit raising the speed limit inside metro Louisville and near Cincinnati in Northern Kentucky.

3/6/07-The House voted 69-27 to approve a bill that could raise the speed limit on the state's rural interstates and parkways.
Sponsored by Sen. Brett Guthrie, R-Bowling Green, SB83 now heads back to the Senate for final approval before moving to Gov. Ernie Fletcher's desk where he is expected to sign it.
The bill could increase the speed limit for all vehicles to 70 mph - up from the current 65 mph. Speed limits on the state's urban interstates would be unchanged.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet would be required to review the parts of roadways where the maximum speed limit could be increased. The House added a provision that specifically identifies the routes that would be considered for speed boosts.

Sponsored by Sen. Brett Guthrie, R-Bowling Green, SB83 would also allow travelers to drive 70 mph on rural stretches of four-lane parkways.
If approved by lawmakers, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet would be required to review the parts of roadways where the maximum speed limit could be increased.
If approved in the House, it would head to the governor's desk. The Senate already approved it.

Sen. Brett Guthrie, R-Bowling Green, offered an amendment to his bill - SB83 - to also allow travelers to drive 70 mph on rural stretches of four-lane parkways.
If approved by lawmakers, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet would be required to review the parts of roadways where the maximum speed limit could be increased.
The bill is awaiting assignment to committee in the House.
