1/4/08-SB783 remained in committee when the 2007 session closed. It can be brought back for consideration during the session that begins Jan. 9.
9/20/07-A bill in the Senate Energy Policy and Public Utilities Committee would prohibit drivers to text message while at the wheel.
Sponsored by Sen. Buzz Thomas, D-Detroit, SB783 would punish drivers who are caught reading, typing or sending text messages on an electronic wireless device, such as a Blackberry. It also would playing video games while trying to drive.
Violators would face $100 fines. It would be a secondary offense, which means police could only ticket drivers for violating the rule if they were pulled over for another reason.
Exceptions would be made for emergencies or if the vehicle is stopped.
