5/24/07-A bill has died that was intended to prevent price gouging in the state during state or federal emergencies. The protections would have applied to necessities, including food, fuel, water and transportation.
Sponsored by Rep. Mark Bruns, R-Jefferson City, HB241 remained in a House committee when the session ended, effectively killing it for the year.
The bill would have prohibited sellers from increasing prices more than 10 percent above their costs immediately before emergency declarations. Offenders would have been liable for three times the amount “unfairly received for each transaction.”
