6/12/07-A bill died in the Senate that would have required applicants for commercial driver's licenses to be able to speak and read English. The House previously approved it.
HB245 would have required the written test to be offered only in English. Applicants' ability to understand traffic signs and signals written in English also would be required. They would have been prohibited from using interpreters or translators while taking the test.

5/9/07-The Senate Pensions, Veterans' Affairs and General Law Committee approved a bill that would require applicants for commercial driver's licenses to be able to speak and read English.
Sponsored by Rep. Neal St. Onge, R-Ellisville, HB245 would require the written test to be offered only in English. Applicants' ability to understand traffic signs and signals written in English also would be required. They would be prohibited from using interpreters or translators while taking the test.
The bill now heads to the House floor for further consideration. The Senate already approved it.

4/9/07-The House voted 136-18 to approve a bill that would require applicants for commercial driver's licenses to be able to speak and read English. It now heads to the Senate for further consideration.

Applicants' ability to understand traffic signs and signals written in English also would be required. They would be prohibited from using interpreters or translators while taking the test.
The bill is awaiting assignment to committee in the Senate.
