5/24/07-A bill has died that would have expanded Interstates 70 and 44 to eight lanes throughout the state.
Sponsored by Sen. Bill Stouffer, R-Napton, SB310 remained in the Senate Transportation Committee when the session ended, effectively killing it for the year.
Trucks would have been free to travel along two lanes, in the same direction. Other vehicles would have used the remaining lanes. A median would have divided the truck lanes.
To foot the bill for the highway overhauls, it would have authorized a 1-cent sales tax increase during the next 10 years.
If approved by legislators, the bill would have gone before voters for final approval.
The state would have been authorized to enter into design-build contracts to complete the highway work.
