4/27/07-The House voted 55-45 to kill a bill that would permit police to pull over drivers for not buckling up. The Senate previously approved it.
Currently, police can issue seat-belt citations to drivers in the state only after stopping a vehicle for another traffic violation, such as speeding.
Sponsored by Sen. Mike Cooney, D-Helena, SB300 would have allowed for primary enforcement. The bill also would have allowed for drivers to be pulled over if a child is not properly restrained.
