6/4/07-A bill died in the Transportation and Telecommunications Committee that would have allowed people without Social Security numbers to get behind the wheel. The rule would not have applied to commercial drivers.
Sponsored by Sen. Ray Aguilar of Grand Island, LB266 would have permitted illegal immigrants in the state to obtain a license that could be used only for driving.
The special driver’s privilege card would have looked different than licenses for citizens and legal aliens. The version for illegal immigrants would not have been valid for identification or purposes other than driving.
