3/7/07-The Senate Transportation Committee voted 3-2 to release a bill to the chamber floor that could lead to red-light cameras popping up in the state.
Existing state law prohibits use of camera radar by law enforcement officers or agencies.
Sponsored by Assemblyman Joseph Coniglio, D-Paramus, S2123 would remove the restriction for a period of 18 months to allow two municipalities to use photo enforcement at traffic signals that are deemed to have a high frequency of red-light runners.
The committee amended the bill that originally called for allowing cities and counties throughout the state to use the cameras. The panel also attached the pilot program provision.
The bill would fine violators up to $25. Anyone who fails to pay up could have their driving privileges suspended.

The cameras snap pictures of red-light runners' vehicles and license plates. A ticket is mailed to the vehicles' owners, regardless who was driving at the time.
