1/18/08-Gov. Jon Corzine signed a bill into law Jan. 13 that is intended to make it easier for drivers with suspended licenses to keep their driving privileges.
The new law, previously S2331, allows the courts and the Motor Vehicle Commission to create a payment plan to pay off fines and replace small fines with community service.
The commission’s license surcharge repayment program will be modified to require 5 percent of each surcharge be paid before a suspension can be lifted. It allows payment plans of up to 36 months.
The law takes effect July 1.

Sponsored by Sen. Shirley Turner, D-Mercer, S2331 now moves to Gov. Jon Corzine’s desk. The Senate previously approved it.
