OOIDA Call to Action - Nevada Members
May 7, 2007

Nevada truckers: time is running out! A bill -AB595 - that would add a weight-distance tax of 15 cents per mile to large trucks is waiting for approval in the Assembly's Ways and Means Committee. Take action now, and speak out against this revenue-generating tax.

Several Assembly Democrats are behind AB595, which would add the weight-distance tax for trucks weighing more than 55,000 pounds, including local garbage trucks and cement haulers.

Supporters say imposing more taxes on the trucking industry is a better way to fund road work than fuel taxes. But truckers already pay 40 percent of the fuel taxes and fees that fund transportation in the state.

A weight-distance tax would be detrimental to the trucking industry in the state of Nevada, and would be particularly economically damaging and discriminatory to small businesses.

The Assembly Ways and Means Committee must approve AB595 prior to the May 18 committee deadline. The time to contact committee members and speak out against this legislation is now. Contact information for committee members is listed below.
