OOIDA Call to Action - Pennsylvania Members
April 20, 2007

Pennsylvania truckers! Gov. Ed Rendell wants to auction off the Pennsylvania Turnpike to help raise money for transportation projects throughout the state. Take time now to speak out against privatizing our roads.

For Rendell's wish to come true, the Legislature must send a bill to the governor's suite authorizing such a deal. Rep. Rick Geist, R-Altoona, has offered a bill that would grant the governor's wish. The measure - HB555 - in the House Transportation Committee would allow the state to enter into agreements with private business to lease toll roads and bridges.

The governor said leasing the nation's first superhighway for $10 billion during the next 30 years would supposedly help the state raise $965 million annually for needed transportation projects.

Lawmakers need to realize that the private sector is accountable to its shareholders, not to the public. The private sector will put profits ahead of maintenance, safety and smooth travel. The companies lining up for privatization deals see long-term cash flow and guaranteed, healthy profits at the public's expense.

Deals like HB555 are akin to a pawnshop mentality of hocking your assets for cash now, but paying much more down the road.

Please take time now to contact members of the House Transportation Committee and voice your concerns on privatizing Pennsylvania's roads. Contact information for committee members is listed below.
