12/17/07-A bill in the Senate that has been put on hold until next year would boost fines for truck drivers who follow too closely behind other vehicles and drive in excess of the speed limit.
Sponsored by Sen. Stewart Greenleaf, R-Montgomery, SB368 remained in the Senate Transportation Committee when lawmakers started wrapping up the 2007 regular session. It can be brought back for consideration there during the session that begins Jan. 1.
The bill would require that trucks with a gross weight in excess of 26,000 pounds found to be following too closely to face $100 fines.
The bill also would double the fine for trucks exceeding speed limits.
Existing state law requires anyone found to be driving more than 65 mph to face fines of $42.50. Any other speed limit violations result in $35 fines.
The bill would increase the fines for truckers to $85 and $70, respectively.
