6/27/07-A bill - HB1204 - died that sought to authorize tolling as a method to pay for new road and bridge work. The companion bill - SB1152 - however, has been forwarded to the governor.

4/26/07-The House Transportation Committee voted 11-4 to approve a bill that would authorize tolling as a method to pay for new road and bridge work in the state.
The proposed "Tennessee Tollway Act" would allow the state to issue bonds and incur debt to pay for toll projects. Private groups also would be allowed to build and operate the "pay-to-play" routes.
Sponsored by Rep. Phillip Pinion, D-Union City, HB1204 would allow tolls "as an additional and alternative method" to pay for highway work. It doesn't specify toll roads or rates.
An amendment added to the bill would limit the initial number of projects to two locations.
The bill has been forwarded to the House Ways and Means Committee. For bill status, call (615) 741-0927.
The companion bill - SB1152 - is in the Senate Transportation Committee.
