3/12/07-A bill in the House Transportation Committee would require applicants for commercial driver's licenses to be able to speak and read English.
Sponsored by Rep. Jim Jackson, R-Carrollton, HB1274 would require the knowledge test to be offered only in English. The Department of Public Safety also would be required to test applicants' ability to speak and read English. Applicants' ability to understand traffic signs and signals written in English also would be required.
For bill status, call (512) 463-2182. In Texas, call 1-877-824-7038.
A companion bill - SB546 - was held in a House committee, effectively killing it.
