5/14/07-Gov. Rick Perry has signed a bill into law that requires drivers at age 79 to appear in person to renew their personal or commercial driver's licenses. The licenses will be valid for six years - the same as current law.
Affected drivers will be subject to mandatory vision test and behind-the-wheel exams if officers with the Texas Department of Public Safety have any questions about their driving ability.
Sponsored by Rep. Dan Branch, R-Dallas, HB84 also requires drivers to renew their licenses every two years after they turn 85.
Renewal fees will be $8 for personal driver's licenses and $25 for CDLs.
The new law takes effect Sept. 1.

3/23/07-The House voted 115-10 to approve a bill that would allow elderly drivers a few more years before being required to pass vision tests to renew their licenses. It has been forwarded to the Senate for further consideration.
Sponsored by Rep. Dan Branch, R-Dallas, HB84 would require drivers to take the test at age 90. Drivers older than 90 would have their license expire two years after the issue date.
It is awaiting assignment to committee in the Senate.
