3/14/07-Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. signed a bill - HB158 - into law authorizing the state to issue a $300 million bond to buy land for Mountain View in Salt Lake County. The corridor is a proposed highway that would stretch 35 miles from Interstate 80 in Salt Lake County to the Pleasant Grove Interchange in Utah County. The bond issue is intended to save the state millions in future construction costs.
To foot the bill for the bond, more than $30 million in tax dollars will be rerouted from Salt Lake County. The revenue will come from a $10 increase in vehicle registration fees that county voters approved a year ago. Money also will come from two sales tax increases to pay for highway projects.

The bond issue is intended to save the state millions in future construction costs.

A provision was removed from the bill called for increasing the state's fuel tax by 10 cents per gallon by 2018.

2/12/07-The House Revenue and Taxation Committee voted to send a bill to the floor of the chamber that would increase the state's fuel tax 12 cents by 2019 to help pay for transportation in the state.
Sponsored by Rep. Wayne Harper, R-West Jordan, HB158 would increase the state's per-gallon tax on diesel and gas by 2 cents every other year for a decade. The tax boosts would begin in 2009.
Consumers in the state now have 24.5 cents tacked on to each gallon purchased.
The bill also would dedicate as much as $30 million to buy land for the proposed Mountain View Corridor.
