2/16/07-A bill has died that was directed at people who throw trash out onto roadways.
Sponsored by Delegate William Fralin Jr., R-Roanoke, HB1736 remained in the House Transportation Committee at the deadline to advance to the full chamber, effectively killing it.
Existing state law allows for violators to face up to 12 months in jail and/or up to a $2,500 fine.
The bill would have tacked on an additional $250 fine for littering - it would have included cigarette butts.
The money would have been used for a public awareness campaign to educate the public about the harmful effects of litter on the environment.
