4/18/07-Gov. Tim Kaine signed a bill – SB829 – into law that permits counties, cities or towns to adopt ordinances to install cameras at intersections. It was signed in accordance with an identical House bill – HB1778.
2/23/07-A bill headed to Gov. Tim Kaine’s desk would permit counties, cities or towns to adopt ordinances to install cameras at intersections.
As passed by the House and Senate, SB829 would limit localities use of the cameras to one per 10,000 residents.

An identical House bill – HB1778 – also has been sent to the governor’s desk.
2/15/07-The House Transportation Committee voted 19-3 to approve a bill that would permit counties, cities or towns to adopt ordinances to install cameras at intersections.
The photo-monitoring systems snap pictures of vehicles approaching intersections and another image while vehicles are in intersections. Tickets are mailed to vehicle owners, regardless who was driving at the time.
As introduced, the bill - SB829 - would authorize the cameras to be placed at intersections in certain areas of the state. The Senate-approved bill was amended in the House Transportation Committee to authorize the use of cameras statewide.
The bill would limit localities use of the cameras to one per 10,000 residents.
Violators would face $50 fines.
It also would require that localities post signs within 500 feet of intersections with cameras.
The measure has been forwarded to the House floor. If it manages to win approval, it would head back to the Senate for approval of changes.

Sponsored by Sen. Jeannemarie Davis, R-Vienna, SB829 would allow red-light cameras to be posted at intersections in Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Virginia Beach, the town of Vienna and Arlington, Fairfax and Loudoun counties. Each locality would be authorized to post cameras at up to 25 intersections.
The bill has been forwarded to the House for further consideration.
