3/5/07-Gov. Christine Gregoire and the Washington Licensing Department want the state to get rid of the private, third-party testers who've been conducting the driving portion of CDL testing.
The governor and DOL are asking the Legislature for $1.5 million a year so they can hire 11 workers to take over most of the testing, The News Tribune reported. The announcement follows evidence of fraud among some of the companies that presently administer the tests.
The request is part of the DOL's proposed budget.
State employees would continue to administer the written portion of the tests, but they would change the process for taking the driving skills exam.
Licensing officials would set up six regional locations to conduct driving tests, The Tribune reported. The agency also wants to set minimum training and proof-of-residence requirements, and raise the testing fee from $50 to $100.
