OOIDA Call to Action - Wyoming Members
February 15, 2007

Attention: Wyoming truckers! A bill being considered in the state Senate would allow a pilot program permitting "photo-red" enforcement cameras to be installed in both Casper and Cheyenne. This bill - HB203 - has already been approved by the House, so it is extremely important for you to take the time now to contact your state senator and speak out against this revenue-generating mechanism.

The cameras snap pictures of violators' vehicles and license plates. Warnings or tickets are mailed to the vehicles' owners, regardless who was driving at the time.

Supporters of photo enforcement say it encourages compliance with the law and saves lives by reducing collisions. But don't be fooled. A study paid for by the U.S Department of Transportation showed rear-end crashes actually increased in cities with red-light cameras, as motorists stopped abruptly at yellow lights to avoid tickets.

Not to mention the fact the motivation of the players in these deals is economics, whether it is the governmental entity or the camera manufacturer you're talking about. There is no reasonable justification for posting these cameras.

Please take time now to voice your concerns about the bill - HB203 - to your senator. For contact information, visit http://legisweb.state.wy.us/2007/members/sen.htm, or contact the OOIDA Membership Department at 1-800-444-5791 for your senator's contact information.
