5/30/08-A bill has died that sought to authorize red-light cameras in the cities of Tuscaloosa and Gadsden.
Sponsored by Rep. Robert Bentley, R-Tuscaloosa, HB24 advanced from the House County and Municipal Government Committee to the House floor only to be “indefinitely postponed.” The status effectively killed the bill for the year.
The cameras snap pictures of red-light runners’ vehicle tags. Tickets are mailed to the vehicles’ owners, regardless who was driving at the time.
The bill would have authorized law enforcement in Tuscaloosa and Gadsden to issue $25 tickets for running red lights. Revenues would have stayed with the municipality. Offenses wouldn’t have counted against driving records or insurance rates.
