4/25/08-A bill has died that sought to allow toll lanes to be added to Interstate 70 between Floyd Hill and the Eisenhower Tunnel.
Senate Minority Leader Andy McElhany, R-Colorado Springs, withdrew his bill from consideration on the Senate floor Thursday, April 24, because of concern there wasn’t enough support for it. McElhany asked that a vote be delayed until May 26 – well after the regular session is scheduled to adjourn for the year.
SB213 would have allowed vehicles to be charged up to $5 to use the stretch of interstate. Exceptions would have been made for vehicles registered in Summit, Gilpin and Clear Creek counties.
It also would have allowed tolls to be adjusted for inflation. Revenue from the tolls would mostly have been used for improvements in the 43-mile stretch of road east of the tunnel.

Even if the bill is signed into law, before tolls could be added the Colorado Department of Transportation would need to seek a federal waiver to allow tolls to be collected on an existing interstate.
