9/3/08-Rep. Randy Fischer, D-Fort Collins, is pursuing a plan to have the state’s youngest drivers attach decals to their vehicles warning truckers and other drivers about their inexperience on roadways.
Fischer said he got the idea for the legislation from a high school student in his hometown who said a decal could benefit new and veteran drivers alike, the Rocky Mountain News reported.
The first-of-its-kind rule would allow teen drivers to affix decals on their vehicles for a couple of dollars. The decals would include the words “young driver.”
Advocates say the decals have worked well in other countries. It is worth a shot as a pilot program in at least certain parts of Colorado to see if it reduces wrecks, they say.
Others say the decals could make other drivers a little more patient, understanding and cautious.
Critics of the initiative say there are already enough laws in place to help protect young drivers.
The issue is expected to be discussed in mid September by the Transportation Legislative Review Committee. If approved, it could be brought up for consideration during the 2009 regular session.
