5/29/08-The Senate approved SB298. However, they removed the provision that would have forced car and truck drivers to remove ice and snow from their vehicles before taking to roadways.

4/16/08-The Legislature’s Judiciary Committee unanimously approved a bill that would force car and truck drivers to remove ice and snow from their vehicles before taking to roadways.
State law already allows police to pull over drivers for failure to secure a load. SB298 specifically targets snow and ice.
The amended version of the bill would allow for violators to face fines between $200 and $1,000 if police determine that snow and ice poses a threat to others or it has damaged another vehicle. Drivers would not be liable for snow or ice that accumulates on a vehicle while out on the road.
Revenue from fines would be deposited in the General Fund.
The bill now moves to the Public Safety and Security Committee. For bill status, call (860) 240-0555.
