5/2/08-A bill has died that sought to allow police to ticket drivers under age 18 caught using an electronic communications device, such as a cell phone, while behind the wheel. Hands free devices also would have been prohibited.
Sponsored by Senate Transportation Chairman Carey Baker, R-Eustis, S504 would have permitted police to ticket violators only after pulling them over for another offense, such as speeding or failure to signal. Offenders would have been assessed one point on their driver’s licenses.
An identical House bill – HB193 – also died.
