5/2/08-A bill has died that sought to allow cameras to be posted throughout the state to nab red-light runners.
The cameras snap pictures of red-light runners’ vehicle tags. Tickets are mailed to the vehicles’ owners, regardless who was driving at the time. Florida law neither permits nor forbids the use of red-light cameras to fine violators, but governments have been reluctant to post them because of privacy and other concerns.
Sponsored by Sen. Mike Bennett, R-Bradenton, S816 would have cut fines imposed on those who are caught on camera running red lights. Violators would have faced $60 fines – down from $125 in the previous version.
Cities and counties would have split about $30 from fines with the rest being directed to a variety of state trust funds.
No points would have been tacked onto drivers’ records and insurance companies would not be notified.
