4/14/08-A bill has died that sought to amend the state’s constitution to allow a county or groups of counties to put before voters a question for whether to levy an additional 1 percent sales tax for highway and transit projects. Voters would have been given a list of projects the revenue would fund.
Sponsored by Senate Transportation Chairman Jeff Mullis, R-Chickamauga, SR845 was sent to a House-Senate conference committee to reach agreement on bill language. The Senate failed to give the bill the two-thirds margin needed for passage.
The bill would have directed 80 percent of revenue generated to counties that impose the sales tax. The other 20 percent would have been routed to the Georgia Department of Transportation, with half of that money dedicated to transit.
