Legislative Watch

Louisiana

6/17/08-The House unanimously approved a bill that would require legislative approval of any deals to sell bridges more than five miles long.
Sponsored by Sen. Jack Donahue, R-Mandeville, SB407 has moved back to the Senate for approval of changes. If approved there, it would head to Gov. Bobby Jindal’s desk.
The bill also would require lawmakers to approve deals that transfer management, control or operation of bridges to public or private groups.
The bill would not prohibit contracts from being signed for bridge repairs, maintenance, cleaning or other work. Tolls also could be collected.
A provision added to the bill in the House would repeal legislation before the governor – HB1081 – that would require legislative approval of any deals to sell bridges regardless of length.
