7/7/08-Gov. Bobby Jindal signed a bill into law that requires legislative approval of any deals to sell bridges more than five miles long.
The new law, previously SB407 also requires lawmakers to approve deals that transfer management, control or operation of bridges to public or private groups.
The bill does not prohibit contracts from being signed for bridge repairs, maintenance, cleaning or other work. Tolls also could be collected.
It repeals a bill signed into law during the regular session – HB1081 – that required legislative approval of any deals to sell bridges regardless of length.

6/17/08-The House unanimously approved a bill that would require legislative approval of any deals to sell bridges more than five miles long.
Sponsored by Sen. Jack Donahue, R-Mandeville, SB407 has moved back to the Senate for approval of changes. If approved there, it would head to Gov. Bobby Jindal’s desk.
The bill also would require lawmakers to approve deals that transfer management, control or operation of bridges to public or private groups.
The bill would not prohibit contracts from being signed for bridge repairs, maintenance, cleaning or other work. Tolls also could be collected.
A provision added to the bill in the House would repeal legislation before the governor – HB1081 – that would require legislative approval of any deals to sell bridges regardless of length.

5/1/08-The Senate unanimously approved a bill that would require legislative approval of any deals to sell bridges more than five miles long. Removed from the bill was a provision that included lease deals.
Sponsored by Sen. Jack Donahue, R-Mandeville, SB407 also would require lawmakers to approve deals that transfer management, control or operation of bridges to public or private groups.
The bill would not prohibit contracts from being signed for bridge repairs, maintenance, cleaning or other work. Tolls also could be collected.
It has moved to the House Transportation, Highways and Public Works Committee.
