12/31/08-A bill died that sought to prohibit drivers from reading, writing or sending text messages.
Sponsored by Rep. Steve Bieda, D-Warren, HB5117 would have fined violators up to $500. Exceptions would have been made for emergencies.

12/11/08-The House voted 68-32 to advance a bill to the Senate that would prohibit drivers from reading, writing or sending text messages.
Sponsored by Rep. Steve Bieda, D-Warren, HB5117 would fine violators up to $500. Exceptions would be made for emergencies.
The bill has moved to the Senate Transportation Committee for further consideration. For bill status, call (517) 373-0169.

6/16/08-The House Transportation Committee voted to approve a bill that would prohibit drivers from reading, writing or sending text messages.
Sponsored by Rep. Steve Bieda, D-Warren, HB5117 would fine violators up to $500. Exceptions would be made for emergencies.
The bill now moves to the House floor for further consideration. If approved there, it would advance to the Senate for further consideration.
