6/5/08-A bill has died that sought to repeal state law that is intended to aid household movers in the state.
Sponsored by Sen. John Griesheimer, R-Washington, SB903 remained in the Senate Transportation Committee when the regular session ended.
Gov. Matt Blunt signed a bill into law last year that includes a provision allowing common carriers of household goods to file applications to the State Highways and Transportation Commission for approval of rates to reflect increases and decreases in the carrier’s costs. It took effect Aug. 28.
The bill would have reinstated the previous rules. It also would have restored an exemption that was eliminated in the legislation signed by the governor.
The exemption would have allowed “household goods movers to operate wholly in municipalities, between contiguous municipalities, or commercial zones” without having to obtain operating authority from the Missouri Department of Transportation. Until last fall, household movers were exempt from the rules and regulations if their operations were restricted to those described areas.
