2/22/08-A bill has died that sought to expand the use of radar to sheriff’s deputies in the state.
Sponsored by Rep. John Moore, R-Brandon, HB447 remained in the House Transportation Committee at the deadline to advance to the House floor, effectively killing it for the year.
State law now restricts the use of speed radar detection equipment to the Mississippi Highway Patrol and city police departments. Cities with populations less than 2,000 are prohibited from using radar on their public streets while cities of more than 15,000 can use radar on federal highways within their boundaries.
The bill would have allowed the sheriff’s deputies in any county with a population of 65,000 or more to use radar on public streets, roads and highways of the county lying outside the limits of an incorporated city.
