6/10/08-The House and Senate voted to forward a bill to Gov. John Lynch that would limit the amount of money that can be transferred from the highway trust fund for non-transportation uses. A portion of the diverted funds would be returned for roads.
During the next five years, HB1618 would phase in caps on the transfer of highway trust funds.
The reallocation would begin July 2009, with the threshold being amended July 2011 and July 2013. At that time, transfers from the highway fund to the Department of Safety would be capped at 26 percent. Another 1.25 percent would be paid to other agencies.

5/5/08-A bill in the Senate Finance Committee would route title fees from the state’s general fund into the highway fund. A provision to also route motor vehicle fines from the general fund into the highway fund, however, was removed in committee.
Sponsored by Rep. Kenneth Weyler, R-Kingston, HB1618 is awaiting assignment to committee in the Senate. The House already approved it.

1/14/08-A bill in the House Ways and Means Committee is intended to help generate revenue for transportation.
Sponsored by Rep. Kenneth Weyler, R-Kingston, HB1618 would route title fees and motor vehicle fees from the state’s general fund into the highway fund.
The fiscal analysis for the bill reports that directing the fees into the highway fund would amount to about $13.3 million for roads and bridges.
