10/29/08-The Senate unanimously approved a bill that would give local governments authority to make certain traffic engineering decisions without approval from the state Department of Transportation.
Sponsored by Assemblyman Scott Rudder, R-Burlington, A2731 now moves to Gov. Jon Corzine’s desk. The Assembly already approved it on a 77-1 vote.
State law now requires the NJDOT to approve many of the resolutions and ordinances regarding traffic management on local roadways.
The measure would provide municipalities and counties with the authority to rely on the expertise of their municipal or county engineers to make traffic engineering decisions. Approval from the NJDOT no longer would be required.
The state DOT would retain sole authority to authorize ordinances or resolutions limiting use of streets by commercial motor vehicles.
