1/17/08-A bill held for study in the House Corporations Committee would prohibit drivers under 18 from sending, writing or reading text messages.
State law already prohibits drivers under 18 from talking on cell phones – even hands-free devices – while behind the wheel. Emergency calls are exempted.
Sponsored by Rep. Joseph McNamara, D-Warwick, HB7067 would fine violators $50 for first and second offenses. Subsequent offenses would result in $100 fines and possible loss of driving privileges until age 18.
