4/18/08-A bill has died that sought to authorize identification cards to be issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles only to people legally and permanently in the United States. Driver’s licenses would have been prohibited.
Sponsored by Rep. Thad Viers, R-Myrtle Beach, H4388 missed a deadline to advance, effectively killing it for the year.
The bill also would have gotten tough with people who aid illegal immigrants gain access to the country. Anyone found guilty of helping conceal, harbor or shelter in the state illegal immigrants would have faced a minimum $5,000 fine and/or at least five years in prison.
A similar Senate bill – S869 – met the same fate.
