6/10/08-Gov. Mark Sanford signed a bill into law to strengthen penalties for drivers of commercial vehicles found to be driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The new law, previously S880, mandates the disqualification from driving a CMV for people found to have a positive drug test or alcohol confirmation test. Refusal to take drug or alcohol tests also would result in disqualification.
Driving privileges would be reinstated once offenders complete an alcohol or drug program.

5/12/08-The House approved a bill that would strengthen penalties for drivers of commercial vehicles found to be driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Sponsored by Sen. Chip Campsen, R-Charleston, S880 now moves to the governor’s desk. The Senate signed off on changes to the bill.
The bill would mandate the disqualification from driving a CMV for people found to have a positive drug test or alcohol confirmation test. Refusal to take drug or alcohol tests also would result in disqualification.
Driving privileges would be reinstated once offenders complete an alcohol or drug program.

12/10/07-Sen. Chip Campsen, R-Charleston, has filed legislation for consideration during the 2008 regular session that would strengthen penalties for drivers of commercial vehicles found to be driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
S880 would mandate the disqualification from driving a CMV for people found to have a positive drug test or alcohol confirmation test. Driving privileges would be reinstated once offenders complete an alcohol or drug program.
The bill is in the Senate Transportation Committee awaiting consideration during the regular session that begins Jan. 8.
