3/27/08-Gov. Jon Huntsman has signed a bill into law that could result in all vehicles driving a little faster along a stretch of Interstate 15.
State law now allows vehicles traveling along I-15 from Nephi to Cedar City to drive 75 mph. The new law, previously HB406, gives the Utah Department of Transportation authority to determine if the speed limit safely can be increased to 80 mph or higher between mileposts 222 and 64.
To determine whether the speed limit could be safely raised, UDOT will be responsible for conducting a study on the subject. An environmental study also would be required to determine the effects of raising the speed limit.
Drivers still would be required to merge right after overtaking and passing other vehicles. Passing would be prohibited if vehicles cannot maintain the minimum speed limit.

State law now allows vehicles traveling along I-15 from Nephi to Cedar City to drive 75 mph. HB406 would give the Utah Department of Transportation authority to determine if the speed limit safely can be increased to 80 mph or higher between mileposts 222 and 64.
Before the speed limit could be increased, UDOT would be responsible for conducting a study to determine if it’s safe to change traveling speeds. An environmental study also would be required to determine the efforts of raising the speed limit.
Drivers still would be required to merge right after overtaking and passing other vehicles. Passing would be prohibited if vehicles cannot maintain the minimum speed limit.
The bill now moves to Gov. Jon Huntsman’s desk. The House previously approved it on a 53-15 vote.
