2/22/08-A bill has died that sought to allow a court to order community service in lieu of imposition of civil remedial fees when it finds that the person is unable to pay or that payment will present a substantial hardship.
State law enacted a year ago relies on higher fines for the state’s worst drivers. Of particular interest to truckers, the legislation includes provisions to boost penalties for overweight trucks and heavy truck registration fees.
The fees for violations made by in-state truckers and other drivers are payable in three annual payments ranging from $250 to $1,000. Nonresidents are immune from the penalties.
Sponsored by Delegate Daniel Marshall III, R-Danville, HB377 remained in the House Transportation Committee at deadline to advance to House floor, effectively killing it for the year.
