2/22/08-A bill has died that would have modified the state’s fuel tax rate.
Sponsored by Delegate James Scott, D-Merrifield, HB41 remained in the House Finance Committee at the deadline to advance to the House floor, effectively killing it for the year.
The bill would have altered the rate of taxation on motor fuels to be the greater of the current specific cents-per-gallon rates or percentage rates.
The percentage rate for gasoline and gasohol is 7.7 percent. The percentage rate for diesel is 6.8 percent.
The per-gallon tax rate for diesel and gas is 17.5 cents.
The percentage rates would have been applied against the average price per gallon of the fuel, less federal and state taxes, as determined by the commissioner of the Division of Motor Vehicles over rolling six-month periods.
