6/30/09-Gov. Charlie Crist has signed a bill into law to streamline security requirements that require port workers to undergo separate security screenings – and pay separate fees – at every port.
Previously HB7141, the new law bans seaports from issuing individual identification cards and creates a database to allow ports to share security screening information. Workers will be able to carry one ID card, reducing fees.
The bill aligns the state and federal security standards and creates a single state database.
Truckers and other port workers who need access to port-defined “secure areas” will pay $50 every five years in addition to other fees for fingerprinting and state-performed background checks.
