8/6/09-Gov. Pat Quinn has signed a bill into law prohibiting people from reading, typing or sending text messages. It takes effect Jan. 1.
Previously HB71, the new law makes fines for violations as much as $500. Exceptions would be made for GPS devices that are part of a cell phone. Of particular interest to truckers, exceptions are made for Qualcomm-type devices.
