6/5/09-A bill died that sought to authorize speed cameras to be posted along trouble spots in six counties in the Chicago area.
SB1852 didn’t get a Senate floor vote prior to the deadline for bills to advance to the House, effectively killing it for the year.
The bill called for permitting the use of automated cameras at points on roadways around Chicago that have high occurrences of wrecks that result from speeding. The enforcement tool would have been authorized for city or county governments in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will counties.
Use of photo radar in Illinois now is limited to the State Police in construction zones.
The cameras snap pictures of speeders’ license plates. A ticket is mailed to the vehicles’ owners, regardless who was driving at the time.
Violators would have faced $100 fines. Points would not have been added to the owner’s driver’s license.
