Truckers in Maryland, heads up! There are two opportunities this week to SPEAK OUT about the toll rates for the Intercounty Connector. Under current plans, once it is completed, truckers can expect to pay between $1.50 and $2.10 per mile to use it during peak times.
The 19-mile toll road is to be built in phases. The first phase is expected to open in fall 2010.
The Maryland Transportation Authority has proposed a toll range of $1.50 to $2.10 for five-axle trucks during peak times, and a range of $1.20 to $1.80 during off-peak times. Six-axle trucks can expect to pay more.
Issues worth bringing up include the recent discussion of providing a discount for local users but offering nothing for other travelers. Also, consideration should be given to providing drivers with a rebate on fuel taxes paid on the toll road.
Public hearings this week give people a chance to comment on the proposed toll rates. Hearing times and locations are as follows:
Anyone unable to attend the public hearings on short notice can still have their voices heard. Public comments are due by 5 p.m., Nov. 23. Visit http://www.iccproject.com or mail comments to ICC Project Office, Attn: ICC Tolls, 11710 Beltsville Drive, Suite 200, Beltsville, MD 20705.
The Maryland Transportation Authority plans to finalize toll rates during its regular meeting Dec. 17 in Greenbelt.
