3/6/09-The Transportation Committee killed a bill that sought to prohibit the use of hand-held devices while driving. Hands-free devices still would have been permitted.
Sponsored by Rep. Paulette Beaudoin, D-Biddeford, LD41 included a provision prohibiting drivers from sending text messages while at the wheel.
Violators would have faced fines between $50 and $500.
Exceptions would have been made for certain drivers, including commercial drivers who use the devices “within the scope of their employment.”
